Preparation and Travel

Step 2

Day One: Arrival

At Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will meet our staff and transferred to Moshi for Kilimanjaro trekking and Arusha Mt. Meru trekking. You'll receive a detailed and friendly briefing about your trek, giving you an ideal opportunity to pick up any essential gear you may have missed. Additionally, your guide will share valuable other info for the trek ahead

Step 3

The Trek Begins

You will need to complete mandatory registration and clearance at the entry gate, and once you have finalized the activity, you can begin your mountain trekking adventure. Depending on the route chosen, the trekking trail starts amidst lush greenery and stunning vistas, and if you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of some wildlife along the way. Enjoy your trek!

Daily Trekking Schedule

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

  • Elevation: 1,950m to 2,600m (6,398ft to Ascent Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Description: Begin at Rongai Gate after registration. Trek through pine plantations and montane forest. Arrive at Simba Camp near the edge of the moorland zone. Enjoy views of Kibo peak if weather permits.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave

  • Elevation: 2,600m to 3,450m (8,530ft to 11,319ft)
  • Ascent Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Description: Gradual ascent through heather and moorland. Pass the First Cave and reach Second Cave for lunch and overnight camping. Acclimatization improves with the higher altitude.

Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

  • Elevation: 3,450m to 3,600m (11,319ft to 11,811ft)
  • Ascent Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Description: Trek across moorland toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp, nestled in a sheltered valley with caves nearby. Rest and acclimatize.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

  • Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m (11,811ft to 14,206ft)
  • Ascent Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Description: Steeper climb through alpine desert terrain. Reach Mawenzi Tarn, a stunning lake at the base of Mawenzi’s steep slopes. Afternoon acclimatization hike optional.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Camp

  • Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m (14,206ft to 15,420ft)
  • Ascent Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles)
  • Duration: 5-6 hours
  • Description: Cross the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Camp, the base for the summit attempt. Rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.

Day 6: Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (15,420ft to 19,341ft), then descend to 3,720m (12,205ft)
  • Ascent Distance: 6 km ascent, 15 km descent (3.7 miles up, 9.3 miles down)
  • Duration: 12-15 hours total
  • Description: Begin summit push at midnight. Reach Gillman’s Point (5,681m) at crater rim by dawn, then continue to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. Descend to Kibo Camp for a brief rest, then further to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,843m (12,205ft to 6,046ft)
  • Ascent Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
  • Duration: 6-7 hours
  • Description: Descend through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate. Receive summit certificates (green for Gillman’s Point, gold for Uhuru Peak). Transfer back to hotel.
