MOUNT KILIMANJARO CLIMBING ROUTES

Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the world’s highest free-standing mountain, offers a range of climbing routes that take you through diverse climatic zones, from lush rainforests to a snow-covered summit. Here’s an overview of the main routes:

MARANGU ROUTE

  • Duration: 5 days/4 nights or 6 days/5 nights (with acclimatization day)
  •  Accommodation: Mountain huts with bunk beds, communal dining halls, washrooms, and toilets.
  • Highlights: Gradual ascent, no technical equipment required, well-established route.
  • Description: The Marangu Route is the most popular option, featuring a gradual climb to the summit. Accommodation in huts makes it more comfortable, with sleeping bags recommended. It offers a 5-day standard trek, with an optional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut.

MACHAME ROUTE

  • Duration: Minimum 6 days/5 nights
  • Accommodation: Camping in mobile tents
  • Highlights: Stunning scenery, more challenging trek.
  • Description: The Machame Route is known for its breathtaking scenery but is more physically demanding. It involves camping in tents throughout the journey. The standard duration is 6 days, allowing for better acclimatization.

RONGAI ROUTE

  • Duration: 5 nights
  •  Accommodation: Camping in tents
  • Highlights: Lower traffic, unspoiled wilderness, northern approach.
  • Description: The Rongai Route is less crowded and offers a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro from the north. It is considered the easiest of the quality routes and is suitable for those seeking a decent experience without extreme fitness requirements.

UMBWE ROUTE

  • Duration: 6 days/5 nights
  • Accommodation: Camping in tents
  • Highlights: Scenic and challenging, suited for well-trained mountaineers.
  • Description: The Umbwe Route is the most scenic but also the most challenging. It features steep and strenuous terrain in the initial days. An acclimatization day can be added for extra acclimatization.
  1. LEMOSHO (SHIRA) GLADES ROUTE
  • Duration: 7 days/6 nights
  • Accommodation: Camping in tents
  • Highlights: Remote and less crowded, diverse scenery.
  • Description: The Lemosho (Shira) Glades Route is the least frequented and offers a remote and pristine experience. It’s a longer trek with diverse scenery, including the Shira Plateau. Fitness and experience are important due to the distance and challenging terrain. There are no huts on this route.

Note: Regardless of the route chosen, climbers are accompanied by expert guides and porters.
